Documentary

Whether it is not knowing how to tell their story, fear of not being understood, or a reluctance to speak what cannot be spoken, many individuals with eating disorders have difficulty expressing themselves.

Expressing Disorder: Journey to Recovery shares compelling stories of recovery that use two creative arts therapies- Dance/Movement Therapy and Drama Therapy.  These therapies allowed the women to express themselves when words and traditional psychotherapy alone were not enough.

The DVD contains both episodes running 40 minutes total, which makes it the perfect length for classroom or community screenings followed by discussion. This documentary project has been used by professionals raising awareness of eating disorders and/or creative arts therapies, but it can also be used at home or in therapeutic settings. The DVD menu will allow you to see either of the episodes or both, back to back.

“Filmmaker David Alvarado manages to tell compelling, poignant tales without stooping to sensationalization.
The stories gracefully convey the depth to which we must take our clients, as well as to infuse the stories with hope and beauty.”

“This film stands as a powerful illustration of the power of arts therapies. It affirms the value of working therapeutically, at a deep, yet psychologically safe level, with those who hunger to have their “metaphors” unmasked in a sensitive, intelligent and informed way.”
—Eleanor Irwin, Ph. D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh,

Drama Therapist, Clinical Psychologist, Psychodramatist, and Pyschoanalyst

““Expressing Disorder: Journey to Recovery” is an evocative documentary exploring the work of Drama Therapist, Carol Dietrich. Carol’s therapies include mask making and role playing and encourage three brave clients who suffer from eating disorders to confront, out loud, and in the presence of witnesses
“the inner noise” that drowns out their stifled healthy voices within. Liberated from harshly critical silent voices in their heads—the hated parts of their selves—the women pick up pieces of their dreams, reinvesting in life and discovering happiness they once knew.”

Television Writer-Producer
